Emily Tien, LMFT
Hi, I’m Emily, and I want to help you go from feeling anxious & overwhelmed to feeling sure of yourself and your ability to handle your life. I’m passionate about helping you navigate life’s challenges and build healthy, meaningful relationships. I became a therapist because I’ve always been drawn to people’s stories and driven to make sense of them—including my own. Therapy has led me to seek answers about why we suffer and, more importantly, how we heal. I’m dedicated to helping others unravel their stories, find clarity, and move forward with a deeper understanding of themselves and the world around them.
I believe good therapy starts with finding the right therapist, so below, I’ve answered questions that might help with that decision.
What am I like as a therapist?
I take a collaborative approach, working side-by-side with you. I often start sessions by asking, “What do you want to work on today?” I listen closely to help you organize your experiences and make sense of complex emotions. When needed, I provide clear direction, offering feedback, tools, and strategies for growth. I’ll be cheering you on along the way—celebrating progress and empowering you to take meaningful steps toward a life that aligns with your values. My clients often describe me as encouraging, insightful, and gentle, even as I challenge old ways of thinking and interacting.
What is my training?
I hold a bachelor's degree in Psychology and a master’s degree in Marriage and Family Therapy from Fuller Theological Seminary, with an emphasis in Medical Family Therapy. I was trained by an EMDRIA approved trainer in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) and am a certified Level II Restoration Therapist.
Who are my typical clients?
I focus on working with teens and young adults, integrating family sessions when appropriate to create deeper connections at home. My clients are typically dealing with anxiety, panic attacks, recovering from trauma, addressing phobias and finding their sense of self. During this critical stage of brain development, I believe it’s the ideal time to form healthy patterns, build resilience, and find the voice that will shape the rest of their lives.
I also work with adults and couples, especially those who have experienced trauma in adolescence or are managing anxiety that impacts their relationships and work. If this sounds like you, please reach out! I’d love to discuss whether my approach is the right fit.
What are the next steps to work with me?
Finding the right therapist can be challenging. I offer free 30-minute consultations to see if we’re a good match. If not, I’ll share a personalized list of therapists I trust.
